The Buncom Historical Society was formed and exists for the purpose of preserving the history of the area and to keep the buildings of Buncom from further deterioration. Buncom, the last standing ghost town in Southern Oregon is located at the junction of Little Applegate Road and Sterling Creek Road. Buncom was the key location during the heyday of the Southern Oregon Gold Rush. In the 1850's, the miners built as many as 1,500 shanties and mined for gold feverishly along the streambeds. The Post Office and General Store were closed in 1917. A former bunkhouse and cookhouse are among the remaining buildings of Buncom. A celebration is often held there in May attracting many visitors.
